We had an application that required two identical gear reducers to maintain the operation of one key piece of material handling equipment. Over the years maintenance had grown accustom to a failure rate of approximately 8 units per year and in fact, the crews were taking pride in how fast they could change-out a defective reducer. I personally bought several pizzas, dozens of donuts and gallons of celebratory coffee. The turnaround rebuild time from our previous gearbox shop was approximately 2 months. We had an unexpected spike in failures which depleted our inventory of spares. We looked for a shop for a quick turnaround and found MRT, and in 24 hours we had three reducers back on the shelf. This was extremely impressive but only part of the story. MRT's representatives immediately visited our site to ask and answer the question: "Why do these reducers fail?" They performed a detailed failure analysis indentifying not only problems with the quality of the rebuilds but also application problems, installation problems and maintenance problems. They provided a list of very simple but effective recommendations and in short time the problem disappeared. This single event changed my personal maintenance philosophy from taking pride in getting the job done quickly, to taking pride in knowing that there is a cause for every failure and it is correctable. We now rely heavily on MRT Inc; somehow they always seem to do it better.
